This is our cats first Christmas. They are both 8 months old right now. Well, we put up the artificial tree and they light to play with the decorates. Which is fine. But one fancies climbing up into the thing and already broke it. How the heck do I get the cats to leave it alone ? I can not lock them in another room. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I know this sounds crazy, but my vet told me to do this with my kitten. get a spray bottle with water in it. when ever they go for the tree ****** them with the water. that really works on my cat.

I would put something that they don’t like to smell on the tree. Like with my cat she doesn’t go in my room any more because I put air freshener in my room because she doesn’t like the smell.

My cats are really good at hearing my tone of voice like when I say, “noooo bad kitty!” (squirt with water bottle). Well now they really like water so they get excited but they definitely stop what they are doing when I start to say, “nooo….”
If that sure is not working you can add citrus scented stuff to the bottom of the tree, cats do not like mint or oranges, lemons, etc.

they make a liquid spray that cats don’t like that you can spray around your tree, the cats won’t go near it.You have to check at the pet shop to see what it is, i used all mine when my kittens were growing up and i have forgotten the name of it

U can try the spray bottle thing suggested by the other answerers.
U can also place an upside down cone at the trunk of the tree to prevent them from climbing up the tree. The cone can be made out of paper. It looks something like a dog collar that prevents them from scratching their infected ears,,etc..
If u are using the water spray method, remember to disconnect all electricity connection from the tree,,
Best of luck

My cat, despite her being 6 years old, still LOVES to eat the tree when we put it up. It’s artificial like yours is, but every year it’s the same thing. How I get her to stop is to just sit there and watch her do it for a while. I say nothing but I stare at her. Eventually she stops on her own and realizes that she did something wrong because I’m suddenly not fawning all over her like I usually do. But if that doesn’t work, a little nudge with the hands away from the tree and a firm “no” usually work. Make sure to use their name too… example: “Baby, no.” And that usually helps a little bit. ^_^

I had that same problem so I went out and bought a 3 ft Christmas tree and put on top of my entertainment stand which either of my cats can get on…best thing I ever did. So now I have that little area decorated for Christmas without having the headache of having it on the floor.
Good Luck
P.S. I know your pain…. I have a 4 month old male kitten.

I’ve had similar problems in the past with my 4 cats. What I had to do was NOT hang ornaments on the lower part of the tree. Then I put something crinkly (cellophane or aluminum foil) under the tree so they’d have to walk on it if they wanted to climb, or use sticky tape where they’d try to climb. Most of these things can be camouflaged so they aren’t so obvious. My sister-in-law had to tie the tree to the curtain rod to keep the cats from pulling it down. (Then she decorated the rope, so it looked fine.) If you’re in the room, use a ****** bottle of water to let the cat know this isn’t the thing to do. I usually say “NO” and then give them a ****** in the face. It’ll work as long as you’re in the room. There are also ornaments that sit on the floor that will play a tune when you walk past them. This might be perfect for scaring kitty away.
