We have a small pine that my husband left Christmas lights on for over a year. I recently noticed that it is dying and some needles and branches are turning brown. I had my husband take the lights off, but I want to know if there is anything else we can do to help restore this tree. I heard that 7 up works. Is that a myth or are there any other home remedies that could help?

lights bring heat. heat that close to a tree can slowly but surely kill it.

and plus, seeing that the tree is probably inside? (or maybe not) it is out of it’s natural element.
If it is outside, it could be breaking down the branches and the tree all together.
take the lights off, and give it time.

Leaving the lights in a tree shouldn’t have any affect on it, unless the lights were literally on 24/7 but even then its hard to imaging that being the problem.
Pine tree limbs tend to die off when they get little light, are too dense, etc. especially scotch pines and the like. Its a natural thinning process for these type of pines.
However, if its turning brown and dying overall you may have water issues or a bug.

I cannot see Xmas lights being the cause of your problems. Without seeing the tree or knowing its history it is impossible to give an opinion.
