I just took in 2 cats living outside and they tried to climb my fake silk tree to get out and am worried about them climing the Christmas tree when the time comes? Any ideas?
Any time you catch them climbing on your trees, take a water bottle and give them a few squirts. It will let them know in a very humane way that they are not allowed to be climbing on your trees and that you are the boss.
Easiest way I found was aversion therapy. ****** bottle of water, and when they climb it, spray em. They’ll stop climbing after 2 or 3 times. Worked for all 3 of my cats, even the kitten.
enclose it behind glass ??? you could keep them in another room ? Cats and trees go together ! Cats have attitudes. They will probably think you put it there for them !
My grandmother always just took a spray bottle filled with plain tap water… and gave them a little sprits whenever they tried to climb up her Christmas tree! ANd they don’t try to climb up it anymore.. so i guess it works!
Looks like we all agree with the water thing then haha
Shut them outta the room when you’re not home, and when your are, keep a small water gun ( not the huuuge super soakers kids play with) or a spray bottle when you are home!
Gotta be (very slightly) cruel to be kind…if they didn’t learn through the water method, they’d learn through the tree-falling-down-on-top-of-them method…
All in all, considering that you would have to put the tree up again, if they pulled it over, the water one seems easiest!
Also try not to let anything shiny dangle from the bottom of the tree, they will be attracted to it !
Another thing to try, is attach small bits of orange peel around the bottom branches, cats (usually) **** the smell of orange ( or maybe lemon would work,i’m not sure)
Good Luck xxx
one of my cats, who was 3 just passed away from a brain tumor. that ****** would always climb our x-mas trees! i have pictures of him in the tree!! it was hard. last yr we used a water gun. it helped, but just scoulding seemed to work the best. i wish he was still here, so i could watch him do it this year, but we won’t be able to. i miss him so!
They will probably be less feral come Christmas but cats climb trees, it’s what they do. Is it possible to shut them in a room away from where the tree will be at night? They might stay away from it while you are awake if you train them with a spray bottle but cats have no shame and will go do what is natural to them when the crazy human leaves. Good for you taking in the cats.
ha! good luck, ur going to get lots of ideas but they can’t help themselves. its a tree w/ lights blinking and balls!!! OMG!!tons of lil’ balls!!! i guess you could try putting one of those mats down under it, you can get them at a pet supply place, they don’t like the feeling of the mat so they won’t go near it.
this will be PT’s 1st X-mas and i’m not sure how long our tree will last.

you should train them, get something to block the room where the tree is. I don’t know how to train animals though so I don’t know what else to do.
