Have someone hold the tree while you hit the wood with a nice big hammer. Aim your blows parallel to the trunk, towards the base of the tree. Rotate the tree after each blow to slowly work the nails out of the trunk.
After you get the base off, saw a bit off the trunk to help the tree absorb water.
(I guess the shortcut method would be to just saw a hunk off of the trunk, base and all; but this assumes the tree has enough spare trunk to go around, which is not usually the case.)
