My cat is obsessed with the Christmas tree, and when he goes up there he knocks a bunch of ornaments down. I spray him in the face with water when he does it and he goes away, but he just keeps coming back. We tried putting foil around the tree because cats don’t like stepping on it, but he doesn’t even care. What are some other remedies I can try to keep him off of it?

There are sprays you can buy at the store that have a specific stink that cats ****…try this…it won’t ruin the tree….or put sugar in the water at the base and the cat will just go for the water not the tree…

double sided tape he won’t like the fact that its sticky, well it worked for awhile with mine.. cats are stubborn creatures and will do things that normally they wouldn’t wish to do but its new and they are curious as its not out all the time for him to see.

Well, my cats are like that. But it depends. Maybe its curious because there are presents or something under it. So prbably its just a habit. Dont worry. Itll be okay!

Bitter Apple spray works as a good cat repellent. You can buy it in just about any pet store. It’s also non-toxic, so you don’t have to worry about health risks. I sprayed around the base of my tree, the tree skirt, and the carpet in the area. The first few times, they started to go near it but then sniffed the air and ran off. Works like a charm!

We had the same problem and someone suggested putting mothballs around the tree and taped to the trunk of the tree.
It helped, but didn’t work completely. Our cat was finally cured when she brought the entire tree down on top of her and she had to navigate through the broken glass ornaments to escape. She was afraid of the tree after that.

We find it helps not to have any tinsel or ornaments on the bottom branches of the tree. It is very important that your cat not eat any tinsel as the tinsel could have dire effects on the cat’s intestines. Our cats also would eat the ribbons from gifts so we no longer use ribbon and remove the bows from gifts coming from friends.

I’ve had cats for over 30 years and usually buy live trees. I’d agree with most here. How to keep cats away from the Christmas tree? The short answer is: you don’t… but you CAN find ways to make it less attractive.
Leave the bottom of the tree bare. When I removed shiny, dangly things from the bottom of the tree, my cat stopped trying to climb it. He drank the water in the tree stand occasionally but he pretty much left the tree alone.
– You might try the sticky strips — didn’t work for me…
– You could watch him/her like a hawk and try scolding or distracting him when he goes near the tree… but that really requires constant vigilance… Being a cat, he just likes the idea of having something to climb or chase; he doesn’t understand why it bothers you…
– You could put him in another room… but that assumes that you HAVE another room you could use…
Best to you!

By not putting one up. Seriously, if we didnt have a kid, we wouldnt put one up. We have done everything to try and keep our cat out, but NOTHING works!! I guess we just have to grin and bear it.
